LFW: the facts for s/s 2011's event

The biggest event of the season officially started this morning (my yesterday so I seem to have been waiting for the reports of the first day for forever) at Somerset House with Paul Costelloe’s autumn/winter 2011 show. The British Fashion Council is the main organiser of the week and will be hosting 65 catwalk shows and 45 salon shows.

Throughout the week designers, models and spectators will be flocking to various churches, restaurants and civic buildings for certain designer shows, all chosen by the brand themselves. Several this season have opted for smaller, more intimate and more couture-oriented salon shows.
For example Old Billingsgate Market will be taken over as the Topshop-sponsored NEWGEN venue, where many of the younger designers, including Michael van der Ham and Richard Nicoll, will stage their collections.

Samantha Cameron, the Prime Minister's wife, gave a speech at the opening this year saying that fashion is one of the UK's most important creative industries. Hello recognition!

This time around the event will see more than 5,000 visitors attend the shows over the six days.

The event will bring 170 UK and international designers to the capital, 30 less than last year, to show their autumn/winter collections to a global audience of media and retailers.

The media coverage of LFW is worth over £50m each season, exceeding most major sports and international events.

This season the last day of the event is dedicated to menswear. Damn right I say. I thnk that may be one of my favorite days to read up upon.
