WICKED; Defying Gravity

I am on a teatrical high. Today the Bannerman family went on a spontneous trip to London's West End and saw Wicked the musical. it was phenomenal. the singing, thedancing, the acting, even the storyline surprised me as i was no expecting such a complex script and i have to say i realy was hooked!
however, considering where my interests (and some might say obsessions) lie i watched the costumes and styling reigiously throughout, and wow there was a lot to keep track of. as soon as i started i was tempted to whip out my notebook and start scrawling but on second thoughts i massively decided against it for fear of being removed from the building.
the costumes and attention to detail were incredible. Susan Hilferty was the costume designer for the show and has designed over 300 productions from Broadway to the Bay area- and internationally including Japan, London, Australia, Germany and South Africa. this is the first show that i have been to that she has been involved with and i truelybelieve that she created a cast clothed in the most magical costumes i have seen within a live production probably..well..ever
the representation of the emerald city showed imagination and styling beyond its limitations and i loved the eclectic mix of shapes, styles, patters and colourways and the way in which the costumes conformed to the theme in a high-end fashion form! it massively reminded me of the fairytales and wonderlands fahsion show that we put on and i would have died to have one of these pieces to showcase.
my favorite piece of styling however was the scene whereby the cast attended a dance and were clothed in monochrome tones that worked effectively with the ighting to communicate an idea of a night/evening scene. again each chorus member had a completely different design to the next with layering that complimented the choreography and showed off the designs to their glorious extent.
the whole show presented pure talent and the styling in particular will take some beating. Susan Hilferty, you can add another fan to your fantastic work!
