wow.
When I strarted looking into what had gone on on Day Five of LFW I thought I was going to struggle to find a collection that stood out to me as having that breath-taking effect that I'd found in some of the collections over the previous days. I dont know why I felt like this but I was soon corrected when I saw this fabulous collection by Greek designer Mary Katrantzou. This is what London Fashion Week is all about - the bizarre, the insane, the out-of-this-world-never-going-to-be-seen-in-a-regular-persons-wardrobe collections that make a statement on the catwalks and make the city renowned for being a fashion capital of the world.
When browsing the images from the show I immediately thought of High Tea in Windsor and delicate China cups, saucers and teapots. An oriental theme with somewhat modern structure and, like Paul Smith and Burberry, a very set theme from which the design brief seemed to have been set around. Each and every garment that was showcased linked to the one before and the show took the audience through a wave of colour pallets that remind me of the colours of the sea.
Within AW 11, Katrantzou is said to have looked to the
"prized possessions... that a woman like Babe Paley or the Duchess of Windsor would have."
And quite obviously so too, considering my initial relation to all things Windsor! The research lead Katrantzou to create sculptural art-form pieces that took on a wide variety of unique patchwork prints, similar to that of a Fabergé egg.
Opulence was certainly not in short supply here. Decorative dresses, skirts, leggings and jackets, Katrantzou went 3D with her silhouettes and the focus on such pattern creates a HUGE contrast to the recent Burberry collection that I blogged. What a diverse week this is shaping up to be!
The collection had a warrior princess theme throughout and she incorporated intricate Chinese porcelain prints with her lampshade skirts that are fast becoming her signature. This was before softening things with more wearable garments such as sheer fabric trousers, floaty gypsy skirts, as well as knitwear - believe it or not. This collection had everything yet didnt veer from its theme.
What an art this designer has perfected.

and the fave...
